BURLINGTON, Vermont – Two of the University of Vermont's finest student-athletes have been honored as the America East Scholar-Athlete in their sport in a vote of the league’s athletic administrators.

Sophomore cross country and track and field standout Michele Palmer (Plymouth, MA) and track and field captain George Deane (Springfield, VT) were both honored as the top scholar-athlete in their sports, Palmer in cross country and Deane in track and field.

The America East Scholar-Athlete Award is just the latest in a string of honors Palmer has received. One of the top runners in New England, she was named to the Verizon Academic All-District Second Team in a vote of the region’s sports information directors in May, and was also selected as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine. Palmer has competed in the last two NCAA Cross Country Championships for the Catamounts, and is an all-conference runner in indoor and outdoor track and field.

Palmer finished third in the 10,000 meters at the 2002 America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She has a 3.74 grade-point average in Environmental Studies, and is a two-time member of the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Deane, an all-conference performer in both cross country and track and field, finished his standout career at UVM in record-breaking fashion, winning the conference outdoor championships in the 1,500 meters and then setting the school record in the event in his final race as a Catamount at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, NJ. Deane finished the 1,500 meters in 3:51.03, breaking his old record by less than a half a second. He holds four school records and won numerous America East titles while establishing himself as one of the top middle-distance runners in New England. A top student-athlete, Deane just is pursuing his Master’s degree in Educational Studies at UVM.

Deane and Palmer are now eligible to win the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Those winners will be announced later this summer.
